What is functional medicine?

There are many approaches to medicine, health and well-being. Functional medicine is a personalized, systems-oriented form of care in which patients and doctors work together to address the underlying causes of complex chronic disease. Rather than providing disease-focused care, functional medicine offers patient-centered care, taking nutrition, fitness, lifestyle and hormone balancing into consideration.

The Prevea Functional Medicine team is led by Dr. Kristen Lindgren. After practicing family medicine for eight years, she completed a fellowship in anti-aging, regenerative and functional medicine.

She believes we have control over how we age and feels strongly about giving patients the tools they need to improve their quality of life. Dr. Lindgren enjoys watching the transformation that takes place when patients are able to optimize their lifestyle, weight, and hormones.

What does functional medicine address?

  • Chronic disease management: With the recent spikes in diabetes, heart disease, cancer, mental illness and autoimmune diseases, functional medicine has become vital to those that cannot tolerate medication or want a more holistic approach. Dr. Lindgren studies the interactions among genetics, environmental factors and lifestyles that can influence long-term health and chronic disease.

  • Hormone balancing: Hormone balancing is an important component of functional medicine that aims to optimize hormone levels to prevent aging – the root cause of disease. As men and women age, their hormone levels decrease. Both men and women can benefit from bioidentical hormones, which are hormones made from natural sources that mimic those made by our bodies. Bioidentical hormones have been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease and prostate and breast cancer.

Bioidentical hormones can be delivered via:
    • Pellet therapy
    • Injections
    • Topical creams

  • Weight loss: Ideal Weigh, a medically supervised weight loss program, helps dieters shed unwanted pounds and control insulin production. Learn more.
